Returning to Salah After Years Away: A 30-Day Plan
Maybe you used to pray. Maybe you never really learned. Either way: years have passed, and the gap feels overwhelming. This guide is for you. No shame. No overwhelm. Just a 30-day plan to come back.
Before you start: three things to internalize
- Allah loves the returning servant more than the consistent one. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah is more pleased by tawbah than a man who lost his camel in the desert and finds it again. Your return is an act of love.
- Don't try to fix everything at once. Fix today. Then fix tomorrow.
- You don't need to be perfect. You need to be moving in the right direction.
Days 1-3: Just Maghrib
Don't try to pray all 5 prayers immediately. Start with one — Maghrib. It's short (3 rakat), the time is at sunset (a natural anchor), and the window is short (so you can't procrastinate).
Use Just Pray to get the exact time and an adhan notification. Pray. Log it. That's the whole goal.
Days 4-7: Maghrib + Isha
Add Isha. They're close together in the evening, so adding the second is easy.
Days 8-14: Add Fajr
This is the hard one. Set an alarm 5 minutes before Fajr begins. Get up. Make wudu. Pray. Go back to sleep if you want.
For the first week, keep it short — 2 rakat. Don't add Sunnah yet. Just establish the habit of getting up.
Days 15-21: Add Dhuhr
Dhuhr is in the middle of the workday. Find a 5-minute break. Step into a quiet room. Pray.

Days 22-30: Add Asr — and now you're praying all 5
Asr is the most-missed prayer for working Muslims (read about why and how to fix it). Set a hard alarm. Step out of meetings. Pray.
By Day 30, you're praying all 5 fard daily. That's the foundation for the rest of your life.
What to do about all those missed years
Make sincere tawbah. That's the most important step. Then, alongside your daily prayers, gradually make up qada when you can. Don't let the size of the qada paralyze you — many scholars say sincere tawbah covers what was missed if you commit to consistency going forward.
What about Sunnah Rawatib, Tahajjud, etc.?
Don't worry about them yet. Get the 5 fard solid for 60-90 days first. Then add Sunnah. Then maybe Tahajjud. Build the foundation before adding floors.
Start your return today. Download Just Pray — it'll guide you gently. May Allah make your return easy.
Frequently Asked Questions
›Will Allah forgive me for missing years of prayers?
Yes. The door of repentance (tawbah) is open until the soul reaches the throat. Allah is described as Al-Ghafur (the All-Forgiving) and Al-Wadud (the Loving). Sincere tawbah wipes the slate clean. Don't let shame keep you from coming back.
›Do I need to make up all my missed prayers (qada)?
Scholars differ on this. The mainstream view of all four schools is yes — but most modern scholars allow this to happen gradually over time, alongside daily prayers. Don't let the size of the qada paralyze you. Start with daily prayers first.
